Our young carers are boxing clever as we launch our latest initiative to support the growing number of young people in North Yorkshire who look after a loved one. With the help of Harrogate Borough Council, we have broken new ground by staging boxing lessons as a way of helping our “hidden heroes” overcome the day-to-day stress and pressure they face.

We have linked up with H Hour, a Harrogate boxing gym, to provide the sparring sessions for all our young carers. The boxing lessons add an exciting new dimension to the range of support we provide to young carers who relentlessly juggle the daily demands of their own life with those of the family member they look after. Over and above giving them a much-needed break, boxing is a sport that promotes self-discipline. It provides the ultimate escape for some of the pent-up aggression and frustration that can build up when you are a carer.

The owner of H Hour, Rob Smith, is drawing upon his skills as an England boxing coach to teach the teenagers how to box. He and his team have more than 50 years’ combined fitness training experience in both the Army and civilian life and have taken novice boxers all the way to regional and national champions. He said: “We are delighted to be part of this initiative and hope to recruit some of these boxing champions to come to Harrogate and deliver some training sessions and inspirational talks to young carers.”

We have been lucky enough to have secured a small grant from Harrogate Borough Council which will ensure we can offer regular boxing sessions for the next year. We will also welcome professional boxers who will give our young carers inspirational talks on how they have turned their hobby into a profession. The first talk was from Josh ‘The Warrior’ Warrington who used to be a young carer himself.

Our boxing sessions are offered to young carers aged 9+ of all abilities. For more information on upcoming sessions telephone 01423 500555 or email hflynn@carersresource.org.
